Godly Grammas And Moms

by Jean Martz

Mothers! Grandmothers! What impact are you making on those children and grandchildren! Your influence in their lives will reach into eternity. For what will they remember you? The pursuit of place, position, possessions or the pursuit of holiness? Can you lead them to Christ as Savior? Can you guide them through the scriptures to show them the holy life God wants them to live? Do you pray for them? Do you pray with them? Are you building precious memories with eternal values?

What examples we have in Grandmother Lois and Mother Eunice! What a Timothy! Paul says,

"I am calling up memories of your sincere and unqualified faith (the leaning of your entire personality on God in Christ in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom and goodness), a faith that first lived permanently in the heart of your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am fully persuaded dwells in you also. But as for you, (Timothy) continue to hold to the things that you have learned and of which you are convinced, knowing from whom you learned them, and how from your childhood you have knowledge of and been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to instruct you and give you the understanding for salvation which comes through faith in Christ Jesus, that is, through the leaning of the entire human personality on God in Christ Jesus in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom and goodness." 2 Tim. 1:5; 3:14, 15 (Amplified New Testament).

And so Timothy from a very young child was instructed and trained in the Word of God by his Grandmother Lois and Mother Eunice. They evidently put great value in the Bible for themselves, so they took every opportunity to instill within his heart and mind the Holy Scriptures. (One is reminded of some basic Scriptures like Isa. 28:9, 10 and Deut. 6:7-9 that tell the Who? How? When? Where? of teaching our children.) They not only taught him but showed him through their own lives how their faith was put into practice in their daily living. Because they had sown the seed of the Word so generously in Timothy's receptive heart as a little child, when he was confronted with the message of salvation by the Apostle Paul, he readily accepted Christ as his Savior. They not only prepared Timothy for salvation, but for his life work as he was called to be a co-worker with Paul on his missionary journeys.

In the letters to Timothy, Paul not only continued the emphasis on the Word of God (1 Tim. 1:15; 4:12, 14; 6:11-14; 2 Tim. 2:1,2; 3:16, 17; 1 Tim. 2:1, 5, 8) but showed him the importance of a faithful prayer life. Not only should Moms and Grammas teach their children and grandchildren and be the examples before them but should be faithful in daily prayer with and for them.
